If you didn't get enough last night of ABC News anchorman Charles Gibson's interview with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the network has a cycle of coverage today worthy of a 24/7 cable news channel. Segments of the interview will be shown on Good Morning America, on at 7 a.m.; World News, which begins at 6:30 p.m.; and 20/20, which starts at 10 p.m.GOLDEN SATURDAY As hard as it might be to conceive of a TV event this weekend bigger than Olympics star Michael Phelps making his acting debut as host of NBC's Saturday Night Live, I suspect there might be even more anticipation as to if and how the comedy troupe will deal with GOP vice presidential candidate Palin. With some major media pieces today finally chronicalling the real Palin (stripped of symbolism and hype) and using concrete records and those stubborn factual realities, we will indeed soon discover that this fur-fleeced empress never did have any clothes. These GOP speeches to rabid consituents and McCain's (sad) tenancious, hand wringing, uncomfortable looking desperation and cling to me Sarah! So that actually means he as well is an now emperor with no clothes. 80% approval rating? Or would it be more apt to say 60% fear rating of being branded one of Palin's haters if you don't approve and word leaks out? Tina Fey rocks.

DFW, RIP

Bush Doctrine, Cont'd. John B. Heart-breaking, stomach-punching news that David Foster Wallace has died of an apparent suicide. He was 46. I always liked his fiction but was even more enamored of his non-fiction, especially his famous essays for Harper's (later reprinted in this book) recounting his adventures on a cruise ship and at the Illinois State Fair--essays that, like so much of his writing, managed to be both wickedly funny and achingly humane. I can't find any good representative examples of DFW's work online, so, in lieu of that, I think this profile of DFW from the NYT Magazine back in 1996, when his writing career was on the verge of entering the stratosphere with the publication of Infinite Jest, does a nice job of capturing his combination of talent and vulnerability that made him such a literary hero to people my age.
